Connector

Connector front

The CANmod.temp uses a DB9 (D-sub9) connector for supply and CAN-bus (CAN-P). It uses a mini-USB connector for configuration, streaming, and firmware update.

Supply

The supplies are internally protected against reverse polarity and low-energy voltage spikes. Refer to the Electrical Specification for more details on the device supply.

The device can be powered through the DB9 connector using one of the below supply lines:

  • Supply (5-24 V), pin 9

  • Supply (5 V), pin 1

Warning

The Supply (5 V) pin tolerates 5 V only

Note

The CANmod.temp can be directly powered from the CANedge 2nd port 5 V output.

GND

All GND (ground) pins are connected internally.

CAN L/H

The CAN L/H should be connected to the CAN-bus.

Warning

CAN-bus requires no common reference (ground). However, it is recommended that GND (ground) is carried along with CAN-L/H to prevent that the common-mode voltage is exceeded (resulting in transceiver damage)

USB

The USB can be connected to a PC via a mini-USB cable. For more information see USB.

Connector back

Four thermocouples can be connected to the CANmod.temp using miniature type connectors. For information on supported thermocouple technologies, refer to Signals.

Warning

In most cases, the thermocouple wires (T-/T+) can be directly connected to the input ports. However, if inputs exceeding the specified limits are possible, external filtering and/or protection circuitry are needed to prevent damage to the module.

The thermocouple connectors are named based on their placement on the backplate:

  • TL: Top-Left

  • TR: Top-Right

  • BL: Bottom-Left

  • BR: Bottom-Right
