Secondary CAN troubleshooting tips
The below can be used in troubleshooting the CANmod.router secondary CAN (DB25).
Table of Contents
Check your basic setup
- Check your pinouts: Verify that your CANmod.router, adapters and application pinouts match
- Check your wiring: Confirm that the CAN L/H wires are connected
- Check your power supply: Verify that you provide 5-26V via the DB9 or 5V via USB
- Verify that you are connecting to valid CAN buses - and that they are broadcasting data
- Check that the configured CAN-S bit-rates match your CAN buses (default is
250K
) - Check that the CAN bus is properly terminated (mainly relevant in test setups)
- Check that you are using the default CAN ID filters without modification
- Check that the CAN-S Mode is not set to ‘Monitoring’[1]
Try USB streaming via SavvyCAN
- Test if you are able to stream data via SavvyCAN as per our guide
Special cases
- If logging from cars, you may be unable to log raw CAN data via the OBD2 connector. In this case, you can try recording OBD2 data instead by sending OBD2 requests. See e.g. the CANedge Intro/Record/OBD2 for guidance
If you’re still unable to record data, please contact us.
[1] | Monitoring mode aka silent mode implies that the device does not acknowledge CAN frames on the bus. This is OK to use if connecting to an active CAN bus with multiple CAN nodes, but it will not work if you are trying to communicate with a single CAN node in e.g. a test bench setup. |
